Manipur - a dark reality that needs to be uncovered

Irom Sharmila is a young woman of Manipur who has been on a fast-to-death for nearly 8 years now. She has been demanding the removal of a brutal law from her land. Manipur is a north-east Indian state (bordering Myanmar), riven for decades by insurgency and armed separatist movements. The Government of India has attempted to control the situation militarily, granting drastic powers to the security forces. The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act enforced in the region lets people be arrested, shot and even killed - on suspicion alone. But Sharmila is willing to stake everything -- even her life -- to restore justice and dignity to her people

MEDIA!!!!

MEDIA!!!

In this complex environment, the one institution which NURTURED, SUSTAINED and STRENGTHENED our democracy is THE PRESS. The role of media during freedom struggle and after independence has been an extraordinary and inspiring saga the media played an extraordinary role!

One of the greatest moment for the media was during the 70’s, marked by peoples movement’s against corruption, (mis)governance, increasing state oppression and suppressing liberty in the name of emergency to fight for their rights which they eventually gained i.e. freedom! Rarely have the people spoken so courageously, conquering fear and prejudice, breaking traditional barriers. It was a time when the electronic media was completely in the hand of the Government, at this time the print media played a more important role in safeguarding democracy. The QUALITY, COURAGE and CONCERN of Indian media were simply the best!

The 90's saw the rapid spread of electronic media, the advent of satellite television made state control irrelevant. Till the 1980’sthe state had always been a dominant player in generating and propagating news, and in determining the fate of the media by its policies , laws (emergency), control (electronic media), and patronage (advertisements). But now all that has changed. The dismantling of the license-permit-quota has created breathtaking opportunities for the media. The future role of the media is in their own hands, and is no longer dictated by external agencies.

India which still is home to the largest number of illiterates and the poor and malnourished on earth, there has been a breathtaking proliferation of mass media is evident. The facts speak for themselves: over 63,000 newspapers of all kinds, of which about 25,000 are in Hindi, over 18 crore combined circulation of newspapers and periodicals, over 800 films annually with unbelievable number of audiences, 120 million radio sets with 24.6% of (rural) population regularly listening with ALL INDIA RADIO covering almost 98% of rural area, 79.4 million television sets (2001) with half the population of India regularly watching the terrestrial TV channels, over 267 million Indians with regular access to cable television, 21% of the population covered by FM radio, nearly 248 million telephones and rapidly expanding, over 209 million mobile phones, over 5 million personal computers and internet users projected to be 100 million by end of 2007, the list is endless! The last decade has seen a remarkable expansion. With literacy levels increasing rapidly over the past decade and more and more people having disposable incomes after meeting the basic needs, media's reach and influence are only going to grow over the next decade and more.

The bigger question is that whether the expansion and power of media has been translated into greater good? Has the media been able to make our democracy more mature? Is the media still a part of the solution, or have they become a part of the problem? Has the Professionalism changed to Profitism? These are troubling questions which haunt all lovers of liberty and democracy. But when the question of dealing with a vast country like India where there are umpteen numbers of newspapers and television channels, there cannot be any generalizations.
What one can say with assurance is that the bulk of the media today represents a moral force for the rejuvenation of republic and transparency of democracy. By its very nature, the press is an empowering and liberating force. In an open and competitive system the media act as umpire to check the ongoing of the government, and promote public good. These are also the vital ingredients of a democratic society.

Looking back at our records, the maturing of our institutions, the power of the media, there is no question of our freedoms, including freedom of speech and expression, ever being extinguished again. There is no external threat to the media in future.
But the danger is from within. Media is increasingly becoming a private tool for profit or pleasure. Some of the negative aspects of the media today are:

There is an ever-increasing obsession in the media with POWER GAMES. There is intense excitement in media's coverage of politics. The papers are full of who is rising and who is falling, who joined hands and who splitted? This approach has severely undermined our democracy, and retarded its evolution. Politics has now become an alternative to bloody sports completely divorced from the lives and well-being of citizens. This had bred enormous cynicism about our political process.

The media, instead of playing the role of an impartial and critical umpire, they have completely digresses from their main motto of objectivity and have started taking sides. The problem with taking sides is that this is not based on the newspapers ideologies and policies but personal profits and mutual gains. Public interest has taken the back seat and truth has become the casualty. Two complete different conclusions are drawn from different national dailies or channels due to their baking of a certain party and playing favourites and twisting facts to suit convenience always leave the reader in complete dilemma of what is right and what is wrong?

Media business is seen increasingly as any other profit-making business. No doubt that any paper needs financial support for sustainability financial and as no paper can run smoothly if it itself is in debt! But one should keep in mind that if news papers or news channels are treated as a source for sheer profit it would kill its basic reason for existence that is the freedom of expression!

Intentions might be good but this is not the only criteria, the problem is that media lack is the decline in professionalism. The more competent journalists are doing an outstanding job. Journalism should never become just another job in any case. The way with which powerful politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen deal with pressmen is converted as a source of private gain. If corruption and degradation of media are not checked there could very soon be a time of failure of this vital institution.

One of media’s “Achilles heel” is its continuous ignoring of the poor and the underprivileged which can lead to easy evaporation of democracy. If hope and faith in the future are extinguished, then ordinary people have no longer a stake in the preservation of democratic order. The media will ignore this at their own peril, because democracy and liberty are the basis of a free press.

The problem is that the basic definition of news has been self – altered by publishers! Whatever makes the maximum noise is regarded as news. Substance is ignored for style, and image is given precedence to reality! Last but not the least there is far too much cynicism in the society! The press, instead of offering sensible and practical answers, is adding to the confusion and commotion regarding people’s emotions.

Both the print and the electronic media have had a great impact on our lives , the have helped us to keep the hope and faith alive within us! To sustain the human spirit even while facing ‘n’ number of problems! There is a level of prosperity and dignity and the confidence in the fairness of judiciary within each one of us! One can see the importance of the role of media with the anticipation with which we wait for the morning news papers and the delight with which we switch on the television to check out our favourite channel There is every reason to hope, and believe that our media will play an even more glorious role in fulfilling our potential as a nation, and promoting human happiness!

A B'day like none other!

There are three hundred and sixty-four days when you might get non-birthday presents … and only one for birthday presents, you know. And deep inside their minds evry1 waits for this day not to get present but to feel special you see! It’s like your day completely. You are pampered, taken care off, loved a little more than the rest 364 days!

So my special day if you guys dono or forgot is on 30th June. This B’day was all different than others…. Good things come in strange packages too! And trust me you gotta be really “LUCKY” to experience something like this.

So I begin telling you the beginning of MY DAY! It already began on a strange note coz it was my first Bday that I would have celebrated without my family! Oh celebrations I mean GRAND CELEBRATIONS that’s what I wanted to tellya.

It began on a nice note! Calls, messages and more calls from all my loved ones. Morning greeted me with missed calls and loads o msgs!! I actually wished myself loud to make myself realize it was actually my B’day!!

In the morning I started thinking bou the venue and the guests accept from a few who were certainly supposed to be there. It did strike me once bou a strike related to Sri AMARNATH Shrine Board but I was least bothered bou this fact, after all it was my Bday! The only thing I thought was bou the venue

Yeah I know bou strikes, they happen often in Jammu all but I was struck and stuck hard when I saw the magnitude of the strike!

Not even a single shop was open! Not even to buy a coke and chips! I didn’t lose hope! My friends patiently drove in the whole city to find something open. All we could see was tyres burning at every 500 meters! I was SHOCKED!! Never in my life I had imagined a B’day like this!

So at last when my friends and I actually gave up, with no chance at all for a celebration, they decided to drop me at my nani’s place as there was no1 at home! So we were about to reach that destination to my utter surprise there was one fast food joint open!! (Though not the one where I would have liked to celebrate, but that day any thing would have done! Trust me!!)

...to be cont...

( this was just a day.. but thers a more important topic attached to this.. Sri Amarnath Shrine Board land..... that burnt a city....... wud update you guys soon.... )

THOUGHT FOR LIFE!

There are no friends and no foes, only circumstances make them so.

  • The one whom you considered your closest friends would definitely end up ditching you.
  • The person who wasn't suppose to let you down, probably will.
  • Youll have heart broken probabaly more than once and each time its harder than before.
  • Your trust would be ruined more than a billion times.
  • People whom you cared selflessly for would say or show one find day that you don't matter to them at all.
  • People who were so dear to you that you cudn't smile when they were sad would be laughing at your back at your hardest times.

It's weird...you know the end of something great is coming, but you want to hold on, just for one more second...just so it can hurt a little more.

(... love u all my friends.. can't live without you... i juz wanna apologise to all those people whom i have hurt... forgive me please... i love u all... forgive me..... )

LOVE

We think about it, dream about it, lose our sleep and diet thinking about it, we search for it when we dont have it and when we discover it we don't know what to do with it. We fear losing it. It is both our source of PAIN and PLEASURE but we don't know what will follow what from one moment to the next. It is a short word easy word to spell, difficult to define and impossible to live without.

Parul Kaul.... a gem in my life

I have written bou many people tryin to thank them for their presence in my life….. but when it cums to u… I am numb…. I dono from where should I begin and where to end…. Dono whether I should write bou ur talents ( god gifted writer) or whether I should write bou u as a person … I dono I m confused … so here I write bou both….

Well she is so open and so frank about things that people many times take her the wrong way…. She is so pure with her feelings that sum even doubt that?... she is really good when it comes to xpressing sumthin …. That people tend to be jealous a number o times…… but it’s a blessing to her friend… ask me… she has a lot of aggression on the outside… always wants to stand for right… especially women equality… there has never been any limit for her standards… she always creates a new line to be crossed….

When she writes, she is so gud that she can actually make u feel the whole thing ( man many o my friends have this talent!.. they are all simply superb).. the best part bou Paro’s writing is she is driven by emotion….has a justification for what she does… juz superb…. Can talk and yeah sumtimes debate for ages together… but when it cums to the matter of heart, she is a complete baby….. baho ki tarah sab bol deti hai.. and if she starts cryin… bilkul hi chota bacha ban jaati hai…… kahin per bhi dance karwalo isse.. she loves dancing… (So if u r getting married do call her.. free main naach legi.. hahaha) ….. and yeah she loves ‘ authentic Kashmiri Khaana’.. hainaa?....

The best part is ones she knows she is right, this female dsnt care bou the wrld……. She can fight the whole wrld alone……( but hum sab hamesha iske saath he hote hain…. U knw na Fantastic 4)…. I thank God for letting u cum in my life… u brighten up my day!!!!!…

Loads of love

God bless ya

May u get all the happiness in the wrld( including u knw na whom I m talking)….

As you simplify your life, the laws of universe will be simpler, solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty , nor ur weakness
Only those things are beautiful which are inspired by madness and written by reason
We all live with the objective of being happy; our lives are all different and yet the same....

Nature - The biggest blessing!

To sit in the shade on a fine day and look upon the verdant green
hills is the most perfect refreshment.

Few sunrises are greeted as eagerly as those viewed through
the eyes of love.

The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is
to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone
with the heavens, nature and God.

Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and
that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple
beauty of nature. I firmly believe that nature brings solace
in all troubles.

Lie down and listen to the crabgrass grow.

( I feel so happy to have clicked these pics... they r such a delight to see.... the best thinf about nature is that it does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.)

AND HOW CAN WE FORGET THE CARS OF THE RISING MIDDLE CLASS

· MARUTI

· SANTRO

· WAGON R

AND YEAH OUR LATEST INVENTION --- NANO

We are all on a rise! Our standard of living has risen significantly. Cars are become more of a need than greed. Almost everyone has one and some have two, three or four too. That’s good news! Right? Our demands are kind off equaling our supply especially in this sector.

But we shouldn’t forget the law of averages. It evens out on everyone. So here goes the icing on our delicious cake. No marks for guessing it’s the petrol prices and the rise in the crude oil prices. Which is likely to touch the 150$/barrel mark by 4th July 08.

The price has almost doubled in six months.

The shortage in oil would slowly lead to increase in price rise and directly affect inflation on a very large scale. Everything around us is going to be costlier for sure. If the prices keep on doubling every six months then it would be plainly impossible to run our vehicles. The time is coming when petrol would slowly ad gradually even become Rs.100/litre. Life would come completely to a standstill.

We would be back to square one, well off people using horses and elephants for commuting and the poor using donkeys. The rich would have a little advantage, maybe they have a driver for their HONDA AND BSA CYCLES! Jokes apart our myopic vision has to think about the long term goals if they want to exist in future and not lose all luxuries in one go.

Rafa- Federer - Hats off to you two!

On Sunday evening all the tennis buffs around the world had glued to their TV sets to see the years most challenging between the King of Clay and the World Champion.

Everyone expected it to be a Tight rope competition as this was a must win for Federer to be the greatest player of the game. On the other hand his opponent Nadal has won three consecutive French Opens. So obviously it was expected to be a nail-biting thriller.

But all it took for Nadal to prove his worth was a little more than an hour and a half. Federer lost in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, 6-0. a match that was expected by the pundits to be a really long and a very close contested match ended up the other way. Everyone was numbed this included not only the spectators but Nadal himself was shocked at what had happened.

The contest was completely one-sided. Never in his entire career must Federer have lost so badly like he did on that day. On the winning podium Nadal was so shocked of what had happened that he apologized for what happened on the court. The victory didn’t sink in him. He didn’t know what had happened. He never expected to win so easily. He was unsure of what to say. That smile which he had didn’t seem like the smile he had when he defeated anyone else coz here Federer had lost more on his own.

Glory is short-lived. Everyone remembers the winner. But in Federer’s case its different. Everyone respects him for what he is and the French Open champion himself knows what it takes to be a Federer.

Hats off to the healthy rivalry between these to champions, they have taken Tennis to a new level all together.

TUM CHALO TO HINDUSTAN CHALE

There is a leader and an activist within each one of us! A change in the system is what all of us want! We keep on cribbing about everything about the executive, the legislature, the judiciary! But is that all what a job of a citizen of a country is? Why don’t we understand that we are a nation who may be centuries old but is young coz of its newly gained independence!

One line in recent times that has inspired me like anything is “tum chalo tou Hindustan chale” simply speaking this one line sums up the whole issue! We in India are people who just love to nag at everything from politicians to bureaucrats to police forces! Discussions and debates are good but nothing would ever happen till we put words into action!

It has to be us – yes you and me who would have to make the difference! I am not writing all this flowery stuff to show my writing skills but for a much serious matter India – our nation! So this time I am talking about action not just the written word! A few of my friends and me have taken the initiative to be the one’s ready to bring a change we have started by small steps like a community in orkut.com and ryze.com called MY WORTHY EXISTENCE! This community is for those Indians who believe in doing something rather than cribbing! Who believe in acting and not in chatting!

You must be wondering what these 18 years can do! Well to begin with our main aim is to make people aware of small things like making their voters card as general elections are coming up in 2009! You might say what we can do… we are too young!
Citing a very recent incident in Yusuf Sarai near AIIMS a man tried to “touch” a school going girl at a wrong place and I saw him doing so! So I ran behind him and chased him and caught him by the shoulder and asked him what his problem was and literally embarrassed him by saying “ aapko kya lagta hai ladki hai tou kuch bhi karloge?” The guy couldn’t even speak a word and kept on saying “sorry didi, aisa fir kabhi nahi hoga.”

Not that I did a mind blowing job but one thing I feel proud of is that person would think a 1000 times before doing such a thing again! May be I even butchered his fantasies for a life time! I am not any SAINT, I am one of you!

There are such endless issues where we the people can make the difference! Join us if you think you have it in you! This is just the beginning we would soon be making our website and many more such things… every person has an important role to play!

WE ARE HERE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
JOIN IN GIVE YOUR SUGGESTIONS
GUYS LETS DO IT TOGETHER!
TOGETHER WE CAN AND WE WILL!

A NEW BEGINNING BEGINS!

Very often we come across an old photo of our self and are completely soaked with embarrassment for the kind of dress we wore! The question we come across is that did I actually wear that? And the photo screams back loudly on us that yes u did! And one often starts questioning herself that what was wrong with my senses. Such situations can be just laughed at because we don’t have any reason actually we just following the crowd!

But what scares me is that there is MORAL FASHION too. The fact that makes them more dangerous is that they are invisible to people! Fashion is mistaken for good looks but moral fashion is mistaken for GOOD. This kind of fashion in our country is hugely followed by our LEADERS. There is a huge contrast between the two kinds of fashions – dressing oddly might make you look a fool in peoples eyes which would make the occasion funny to a great extent but on the contrary violating moral fashion can get you in big trouble in a big way like the public interest can be damaged hugely and the reputation of the country would go for a six! (Which the politicians are least bothered for as they don’t have time from making money under the table)

A country is what its citizens make it and to show the right path to the citizens are their leaders. In short a country is how its leaders make it to be! The leaders are the ones on whose shoulders resides the responsibility of running a country smoothly! What Indian leaders (un)fortunately have in abundance is that they are too involved in their ideologies and yes corruption is omni present in our country like bacteria and viruses! The problem that it leads to is that they don’t have a leader with the right make up! The country lacks a charismatic leader to lead their way ahead! They are all show no work!
What politicians want around them is MEDIA and MONEY!!

But there has been a change, a change in the way people think! People have realised that each one of us has to bring out the activist in us for the welfare of our country! Clichés like chan“yeh India hai bhai, yahaan kuch nahi badlega” “apne desh ka kuch nahi ho sakta” etc have slowly started to change to “hum badlenge system ko, yeh desh hamara hai”! This change is leading to a revolution which would slowly change the mental make- up of our dear leaders who are realizing slowly that elections are won on development issues and not on dividing the society on communal basis and it actually works – take the example of our dear Narendra Modi whose riding high on his victory! It is high time they realized that politicians are people’s servants and not vice – versa!

The power is in our hand and the ball in their court! The politicians need to give us a reason for them coming back to power! You do good and you get good! The law of average evens out on everyone! It’s high time they ran from it, like a ghost it has began searching them! Beware dear leaders, a new beginning has begun!!!!

UNDISCOVERED! - ASHLEE SIMPSON

( A SONG LIKE NONE OTHER- NOTHING BEATS THIS ONE EVER THE LYRICS ARE SELF EXPLANATORY DON WANNA BUG YOU!)

Take it back, take it all back now
The things I gave
Like the taste of my kiss on your lips
I miss that now

I can't try any harder than I do
All the reasons I gave, excuses I made for you
I'm broken in two

All the things left undiscovered
Leave me empty
and left to wonder I need you
All the things left undiscovered
Leave me waiting and left to wonder
I need you
Yeah I need you
Don't walk away

Touch me now, how I wanna feel something so real
Please remind me, my love
And take me back
Cause I'm so in love with what we were
I'm not breathing, I'm suffocating without you
Until you feel it too

All the things left undiscovered
Leave me waiting and left to wonder I need you
All the things left undiscovered
Leave me empty and left to wonder
I need you
Yeah I need you

When I'm in the dark and all alone
Dreamin' that you'll walk right through my door
It's then I know my heart is whole
There's a million reasons why I cry
Hold my covers tight and close my eyes
Cause I don't wanna be alone

All the things left undiscovered
Leave me waiting and left to wonder I need you
All the things left undiscovered
Leave me empty and left to wonder
I need you I need you

Cause I can't fake
And I can't hate
But it's my heart that's about to break
You're all I need
I'm on my knees
Watch me bleed
Would you listen please

I give in
I breathe out
I want you
There's no doubt
I freak out
I'm left out
Without you
I'm without I

'm crossed out
I'm kicked out
I cry out
I reach out

Don't walk away
Don't walk away
Don't walk away
Don't walk away

LEARN FROM YOUR HEROES!!

An idol is someone who inspires you!
An idol is someone who evokes the fire in you!
An idol is someone whose bits and pieces are within you!

I must have begun admiring her may be since I first came to know about her! She has overcome all the odds to make it big….. You must have understood who I am talking about! No marks for guessing! She has to be one and the only KIRAN BEDI

Kiran Bedi is a trailblazer! She broke new ground by joining the elite Indian Police Services in 1972, the first woman in India to do so. She is today the most celebrated police officer, having been awarded the RAMON MAGASAY AWARD for government service. Her humane and fearless approach has contributed greatly to innumerable innovative policing and prison reforms.

Just in case you must be wonder that whether I was going to give you the whole biography of her life which you could access from anywhere in the world from the net, you were wrong! Don’t worry I ain’t doing any such thing.

This article is to understand and realize that there are still a few good people their in India and we need to learn from them and follow their foot prints coz they alone can’t make a difference! And it is not all dark!! There is still hope! She has done what many wouldn’t have dared to even think about! Most importantly she has always stood for what is right! She has had the guts to tow away the PMs car which many wouldn’t have even thought of! The best thing is she has taken all evil and wrong also on her stride! Even after her voluntary retirement due to humiliation of making her junior as the Delhi commissioner she hasn’t stopped working for the welfare of the country!

In her first major step after doffing her police uniform, Kiran Bedi blasted police officers for inefficiency as she unveiled a network (www.saferindia.com ) to register complaints from the public. The Retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer made it clear that her initiative would not serve as a parallel police but only register complaints when aggrieved citizens felt that they were being denied justice. This is another first of its kind by Kiran Bedi or CRANE Bedi as she was famously known.

These are just a few of the great achievements of a greater person! Just to throw light on if she can do it after things not going her way then why can’t we? Why do we always have to say the system is why don’t we try to change it?? WHY? One doesn’t need to make idols just for the heck of it but learn from them and try to put into application!

THE BALL IS IN OUR COURT
THE POWER IN OUR HAND
IT JUST DEPENDS ON US HOW PREPARED ARE WE!
TIME HAS COME TO GIVE IT OUR BEST!

NAKED TRUTH!

The complete North India is shivering from chilled winds! Delhi has registered one of its coldest winters! People seem to love the weather and are welcoming it in their own way! Hot coffees and soups at cafes is the latest trend! Markets are overflowing with people buying new sweaters and jackets to protect their already well protected bodies! People love sitting in their cozy blankets and eat as one feels much hungrier in winter!
WINTER IS WELCOMED BY ALL BUT POOR!

Our politicians must not even know what it is to feel cold?! They must not be knowing what its to not have food as the Five Stars have all been made to serve them! A centrally heated home and too many luxuries make their heads too heavy for them to carry and do the required.

In this weather the biggest sufferers are the poor, the un and the underprivileged! For them it’s another big struggle which they are suppose to fight without any weapons in their hands. With no shelter on their head and food in their stomach it is tough to imagine what one-third of India goes through! Each day a new struggle and no money to even get a medicine for their child who has been suffering from very high fever maybe since days!
Mother Earth becomes his coffin n he dies an unsung death!

BPO- BROADLY PERMISSIBLE OUTLOOK?!

Business Processing Outlook or Brawnly Polluted Office ?! What is it?
Well I recently joined a BPO company and was easily dismayed at the
quality of people I came across. All sorts frequented the corridors of the
call centres- Literally, all sorts! People from all walks of life come
to earn their moolah here. Now that couldn't be a problem. But there is
- PEOPLE, IT IS PEOPLE! Gawd! how desperate i found them to be. Despo
to make a point, drive home the point, desperate to declare that they
had arrived!

As a person who had had a fortune of teaching senior adoloscents for a
max of fifteen years, It naturally felt uncomfortable to see the fresh
somethings walk this pretentious walk on the caller ramp.
Undergraduates, Graduates and sometimes even some unforunate Post
Graduates like me. Freshers, Veterans, Techies et al. It is a virtual
cauldron where cultures andcommunities disappear with relative ease which is good but what is not is a simultaneous disappearance of values and ethics.

This is not a comment on personal choices but a line has to be drawn and quickly before it is too late. For what these poor, unsuspectingand very pretentious late teeniesand early twenty somethings don't realise is that they are actually walking, nay hurtling towards a complete burn-out point from which there will be no return!

Hold your hearts all you royal exceptions and honourable cases. I don't intend to adopt a holier-than-thou attitude here. Only that as a teacher(was) as a person who likes to the precariously dangerous ropewalking that these guys are doing. This article is basically to beware , to warn one and all for tomorrow might just be too late!

(P.S. this was my take on
onenight@callcenter... my perception related to some given facts!..)
